What is Hantavirus? Before panicking and jumping to conclusion, you should know the facts about the virus.
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome is a respiratory disease caused by infection with hantaviruses. It can be severe and fatal in some cases in humans.
The virus is usually spread by rodents’ urine, faeces, saliva as the virus usually infects the rodents. The virus is not airborne but can be transmitted from one person to another if someone touches their eyes, nose or mouth after touching rodent dropping, urine or nesting materials.
The symptoms include fatigue, fever, muscle aches, headaches, dizziness, chills and abdominal problems such as vomiting and diarrhoea. The late symptoms include lungs filling up with fluids and shortness of breath.
It should be noted that 15-20 per cent deer mic are infected with hantavirus but it is rare for humans to contract the disease because virus dies shortly after contact with sunlight.
